From the Bowls Wellington Board

Bowls New Zealand has recently updated their strategic plan, which Mark Cameron discusses in this You Tube video.

It is great to understand Bowls New Zealand's ongoing priorities and its direction of travel, so that we can align, support and adapt locally to the needs of the bowls community.    These video updates are clearly likely to replace the in-person visits that Mark did with all the centres in the past - so have a watch of the video.

Topics on the video such as access to more covered greens, increased participation to our game locally (especially from females) and how technology will likely interface with how we administer the game are all very relevant to us in Wellington.

As always we welcome thoughts and observations via delegates or to any of the Board or Centre team direct as you see us on the greens.

Thank you for assisting with the running of the Henselite Open Triples, whether it be as a host club, greens person, umpires assn.  Your participation is appreciated.

Umpires:  these will be added to the draw where an appointment is made.

Johnsonville is Head Quarters for the 3 days.  Ron Wood is Tournament Manager, assisted by Suw Way on 12 April.  Ron's cell phone contact number is 021 868 816, Sue's 021 412 611.

On 12 April we are using 7 greens, Johnsonville (2 greens), Miramar, Wilton, Titahi Bay, Island Bay & Victoria.

With 72 Men's and 34 Women's entries, we need 3 greens for Sunday 13th.  These are Johnsonville (2 greens) and Miramar.  In preparation for this tournament I had Wilton down "if needed".  I don't believe Wilton will be needed on the 13th.

Note on 12th, there is a 7rink section at Johnsonville 2 comprising 6 women's and 8 men's teams.

In the draw sheets I have shown "no catering" for all clubs.  I am happy to change this for your club if you wish, simply email to give me the words.

The draw is available to you on this link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12mnuToY4J8r0XJ5EiqW_AcjxeJw9fz0VXSpUkMkGRoU/edit?gid=328981792#gid=328981792

It will be live online through the website soon.

Feel free to run raffles/fundraising.

On the 12th please conduct a health and safety briefing before play, ensuring you identify any smoking areas.

All FoxPlan Bowls Wellington tournaments are Smoke and Vape free.

Regards and good bowling to those participating.

To all Bowls Wellington Members and wider community,

The purpose of this email is to directly advise our bowls community that the Bowls Wellington Board has taken the time to carefully consider a number of allegations in relation to the Naenae club’s conduct in the final rounds of the Women’s Division 1 & 2 of Wellington Interclub competition.

The Board has concluded that there are sufficient grounds to warrant that the matters in the complaints relating to Clause 10 of the Handbook “to play within the spirit of the game” be referred to the independent Bowls Wellington Judicial Committee to hear and determine the allegation of misconduct. If the Judicial Committee finds that a breach of Clause 10 has occurred, we will ask the Judicial Committee to recommend an appropriate sanction (if any).

Once the final decision has been made by the Judicial committee we will be able to confirm our Interclub results and promotion and relegation positions. We once again ask for patience as we go through this process.

Bowls Wellington Board Announcement

As previously advised, several complaints were made in February relating to the final rounds of the Women’s Division 1 & 2 of Wellington Interclub competition. In summary, the complaints suggest that Naenae selected many of its usual Women’s Division 1 Team players to play in the Division 2 Team (and vice versa) for the Interclub matches on 8 February 2025 in an attempt, it is alleged, on Naenae’s part to improve the Division 2 Team’s promotion prospects.

Clause 10 of the Handbook states: “Players may move between divisions at any time. However, the Centre expects clubs to play within the spirit of the game” (emphasis added). The Board accepts that under the current rules (which differ from past rules), any club is entitled to move players between divisions however the clear tenure of the complaints were that Naenae’s choice to do so, in the manner it did for the Round 8 games, was not within the “spirit of the game”.

The Bowls Wellington Board has very carefully considered the allegations to decide whether or not, on the face of it, the complaints have sufficient merit to warrant consideration by the independent Bowls Wellington Judicial Committee. The Board has concluded that there are sufficient grounds to warrant that those matters in the complaints relating to Clause 10 “to play within the spirit of the game” amount to potential misconduct and as such they will be referred to the Bowls Wellington Judicial Committee to hear, independently determine and if misconduct is determined, to recommend a sanction (if any).
In light of this complaint and the determination process, no announcements will be made on promotion / relegation in the Women’s Division 1 and 2 for the 2025/26 season until this matter is concluded. Announcements on all promotion / relegations between other divisions will though be made in the coming days and we thank you for your patience.

The Board fully acknowledges this announcement will likely raise comment and discussion. To ensure the integrity of the process is maintained, we ask that you please refrain from discussing any aspects of this matter with any of those that might be involved with the determination process, particularly the members of Judicial Complaints Committee, until the matter is concluded.
